Cappadocia has captured the
human imagination for centuries, and its surreal environment has always
attracted people from different cultures, inspiring a way of cohabitation
with nature that is unique. A number of cultures have left their
distinctive imprint in the soft tufa stone, and became interwoven to
create a fascinating multi-cultural tradition.
The last decades have brought
a fundamental change to Cappadocia and it nowadays seems to be a place
of conservation (by specialists) and consumption (by tourists).
Much like the processes we can observe in many places around the world,
socio-economic changes on the national and global level are dissolving
traditional relations. What happens in Cappadocia stands as a symbol
for the drastic redefinition of basic values that has been taking
place throughout the 20th century. The meaning of place and locality,
the notion of culture and tradition and the role nature plays in our
life are undergoing fundamental changes and it seems more necessary
then ever to reconsider these topics from a trans-cultural point of
view.
